Tools and Hardware Reviews of DEWALT DCF610S2 12-Volt Max 1/4-Inch Screwdriver KitCustomer Review: An excellent, compact driver Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
First impression: Right out of the box, you'll find a zippered rip-stop nylon tote bag. I don't know that I'll be taking the tool on vacation with me, but still, it's a nice touch, and I'll probably bag the driver between uses to keep it clean.
Once you remove the tote bag, you'll see that the drill comes with TWO rechargeable batteries. This *is* useful, because you can always keep one fully charged, and unless you're a contractor, you're probably not going to burn through two batteries.
Instructions. Semi-annoying. Rather than a booklet, with English instructions up front and then several languages in the pages following, the Dewalt comes with "map" style instructions. In other words, they're on a single sheet of paper that unfolds to about 20 x20 (inches, not feet, fortunately.) You'll read through about 2/3 of the English instructions before getting to anything specific about the driver... they've included lots of information about how you're not supposed to charge the batteries while swimming --the standard legal 'CYA' stuff.
Use: My first real use of the driver came when my father-in-law and I put together my new Weber grill this weekend. Although there were not hundreds of screws/bolts to deal with, there were certainly enough (it was about a two-hour job for two people), and when we were finished we were both very impressed.
The Dewalt is small enough to allow you to drive screws/bolts into rather tight spots. There were a few places on the grill where I thought that I was going to have to pull out a hand-tool, but as it turned out, the Dewalt fit into the space just fine. Having said that, it's not so small that it feels toy-like, or that it only gets the job 'partially' done. There is enough torque to drive the screws and bolts tight... no further tightening was necessary.
Another important consideration with regard to the size of the driver is that if you're using it for an extended period, it does not begin to feel like you're holding onto a cinderblock. My father-in-law, who owns an older model (and very heavy) cordless drill commented that he dreaded using it in "overhead" environments for any length of time, as it would start to feel like a dead weight.
The three built-in LED lights were also very helpful when driving some of the bolts in the "shadowy" areas of my grill. I didn't need anyone to hold a flashlight, or stick a small flashlight in my mouth to see what I was doing.
Finally, the bits... the Dewalt comes with a single, small Phillips-head bit. Though this doesn't pose any problem for me, since I have dozens of bits of varying shapes and sizes, don't count on the one bit that comes with your driver to take care of your every need.
In summary, despite the relative lack of bits and the unwieldy instruction sheet, this is still a five-star product.
