Tools and Hardware Reviews of DEWALT DW304PK 10 Amp Reciprocating SawCustomer Review: Best saw I ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
I remodel homes and do a lot of building and you can't find a better tool than this one. I am a tool killer but I haven't been able to do so to this one. I purchased this in 2006 as a factory reconditioned item here on Amazon for about seventy five bucks with a plastic case. I went with this because I am so hard on tools I was reluctant to drop a lot on it only to find it would not hold up over the long haul. However, this saw is pretty much the best I have ever had and it replaced a Craftsman professional saw that was twice the cost and half the tool. I had my Dewalt 12V drill rebuilt by the Dewalt folks and was very pleased with it and it came back like new, and at half the cost of new, so I was pretty sure that anything else rebuilt by the company would be fine.
I take exception to the reviews that rate it as a good saw for the homeowner but they'd go with another brand if they were in construction. I'm in construction and Dewalt is a solid tool line regardless of what country they are made in. I have never been disappointed in a Dewalt tool and this saw is no exception. If you're in the trades you should consider this tool. You're also not selecting this saw based on the blade that comes with it so ignore those comments. Please note that not all of the pics are of this tool... several are a Milwaukee saw.
I have done a lot of work with this saw from removing dormers to cutting down trees and if you use the right blades it'll do a lot. I've sawed off roof rafters, cut through electrical wire, cut large pipes, cut up metal roofing sheets, removed a whole shingled roof, cut off exhaust pipes, brought down some large trees and trimmed off a lot of branches and pretty much totally abused the saw. I have blades for wood, metal, destruction and pruning and the case holds them all. The best feature on this saw is the 4 position blade clamp... which is actually 2 clamps but you can reverse the blade in both. It allows for flush cutting, horizontal and reverse cutting in some hard to reach areas. Good blades will cost you but they will also add years to the life of your saw. If cutting thick stock and 6x6 or larger you need a thick blade or you'll get a wavy cut. The plastic grip in the front is excellent and the saw is well balanced. The variable speed lets you get a blade started without walking all over the place. The quick release blade changer is easy on thin blades but a little harder to use on the thick blades but a far cry better than a hex key like a lot of other saws still use.
I would now spend more to replace this with another Dewalt should the need ever arise. I do have a cheaper saw from a national tool store where I buy my throw-away tools and that's the one that gets to work in the rain and dirt. I doubt that I have ever had a problem with this saw and I can't find a true negative about it that would lower the rating. Lastly, the case is also great and there's lots of spare space in it for all the blades and a few other tools like a tape, chalk-line or whatever. Clean it once in awhile, blow out the saw dust, oil it now and then and it should last a lot of years... even a lifetime for the casual user.
