Description of DEWALT DW6182 Plunge Base
The DeWalt heavy-duty plunge base features an adjustable, tool-free steel motor cam lock for quick and solid-locking depth adjustment and base changes. An integral through-the-column dust collection collects 95-percent of dust and provides superior bit visibility. Made with precision machined brass bushings with case-hardened steel guide rods, the base provides a smooth and accurate plunge stroke. A clear, LEXAN sub-base offers enhanced base durability, bit visibility, and accepts standard template guide bushings. Rubber overmolded handles, a low center-of-gravity design, and an easy to reach plunge lever give the user balance, comfort and control. With five position, the adjustable turret stop assists in stepped or repeated plunge cuts. The micro-fine depth adjustment on the plunge base adjusts 5/128-inch per turn for precise routing in veneer and inlays. I have owned a DeWalt DW618 router with the fixed base for a couple of years now, and I am huge fan (see my review of the router for more on that). When I started looking for a more powerful plunge router to replace my old 1.75hp Ryobi I decided it made more sense to buy this base and use my existing 2.25 DeWalt router motor as my plunge router. This base is very well machined - the fit and finish are excellent. The plunge mechanism operates very smoothly with just the right amount of resistance. The handles are extremely comfortable, and the dust collection design works well too. Basically I have found no serious shortcomings in this product. My only beef is that it is a pain to find the right parts to hook up my Fein Turbo II vac to the dust collection tube/port. But in fairness to DeWalt that is due more to the odd size of the Fein vac hose than to this router base.
